There’s a lot to consider when thinking about the future. We understand the need to priorities the well being of our environment, and we recognise the part we can play in doing things sustainably in order to help communities at large and to minimise our own eco footprint.

Much like burials of the past, Environmentally friendly burials, also known as Green Burials or Natural Burial, are free from any toxic component, making them the most organic option for burial. An environmentally friendly funeral would be one that is planned in a way that best conserves natural resources, helps preserve and protect the environment. Everything used would be non toxic and biodegradable. There would be no embalming used and no other materials or fibres that can upset the earth.

Coffins that are weaved using the wood from Willow trees are among the most environmentally friendly coffins available. Being a highly renewable crop that is also fast-growing, Willow is integral when it comes  to its ease of production and its environmental impact on the planet. The material is harvested each year which involves minimal processing and therefore, minimal environmental impacts.

The material from the Willow tree is able to biodegrade rapidly in soil and aids in locking carbon emissions into the stems of the tree. It is able to break down (biodegrade) completely within 6 months – 2 years depending on soil and weather conditions. In the right soil conditions, willow tends to decompose much more quickly than traditional materials such as MDF (medium-density fibreboard), hardwoods and metals.

Willow is also a carbon-neutral material and when burnt, only gives off the same amount of carbon that it had consumed within its lifetime.

Millions of coffins in production these days pollute the atmosphere with dioxin, hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide. These same toxins are released during decomposition; however, it is a slower process, with toxins are released into the soil first.

Caskets made entirely from Willow, however, are completely natural and biodegradable. Willow coffins are woven and therefore do not depend on toxic glues, varnish, plastics, or metals, which makes them the perfect environmental choice and solution.

These eco-friendly coffins are hand-made in Indonesia by local craftsmen. They collect only the mature leaves from the banana and pandan trees in the wild so that it can continue to re-grow sustainably at a rapid rate. Using this, the dried  fibres are then hand-twisted and braided into a rope and is then skilfully woven over the casket frame to create an elegant two-tone wicker contrast.
